One thing that really concerns me though is the rising number of gun-related incidents in the news.

Re: On vacation

Hey,

I couldn't find another place to contact you, so this is where it's at, heh.

My name is Alex Shebar and I am a police reporter in Cincinnati, Ohio. I really respect your blog and enjoy reading it daily. Police fascinate me and I love to see other people’s take on them.

As someone whose opinion I respect on all matters police, I figured I’d throw something your way and see what you think about it. I’ve just begun a new humorous text cop blog. Basically it’s “Things Overheard on Police Scanners.” It’s just in the start-up phase right now, so I’d love any comments/criticisms/accolades you have (mostly the last, heh).

As far as I know, this is the first blog of its kind. Hopefully it will catch on like other “Overheard In…” blogs have. I’ve been twittering what I’ve heard on the scanner on a daily bases and people really seem to enjoy them. I really think they will like this blog as much.

The blog can be found here: www.TheSqueals.com

So thanks in advance, and hope to hear from you soon,

Alex

Re: FAT COPS?

I can understand them needing to pass a physical test to prove they are capable of doing their job, but the weight limit rule is just too much! Everyone's body structure is different and being fit doesn't rely totally on weight. To go to the extreme of things an obese person might be "healthier" or more "fit" than someone who is super skinny. Also muscle weighs more than fat so someone who is "over their allowed weight" might have more muscle mass and be more "fit" than someone who is under their "allowed body weight" but who is "average" size.

Re: New laws tough on young drivers of Ontario

The we should expect to see no traffic accidents in Ontario... I doubt this will be the case but I also hope that this new law will lower the fatalities. Alcohol and speed should be out of the question in driving, I don't see no other way of making people understand that than a zero tolerance law.
Donnys, Alcohol Intervention

Re: Bleeding Billboard

I agree, if they would save lives, then they should be everywhere. My only question would be, do they work? Does the image of the bleeding face in the rain cause the desired effect of more cautious driving in the rain, or does the billboard distract the drivers as they gaze upon the young boys bleeding face? At first impression I thing the later is the more likely result.

Re: What goes online lives online

This is so right, What goes online lives online! I've been using a personal website to "kind of" blog regarding the job. But I am VERY picky about what I write about. Unfortunately we are seeing more and more of the evil word "Internet" in policies and general orders. Such broad policies make it very difficult to blog about the job for fear of being in violation of policy. Now, common sense applies here of course. You'd be foolish to write about active or pending cases. That's just crazy. But what about basic thoughts? I'm still weighing this one as I search for similar blogs asking the question "How do you get away with it?" I can only imagine these policies haven't hit every department - yet.
Keep up the good work guys. Really, why does a criminal have more rights than the property owner? If you are attempting to, or have stolen something from someone you, as far as I'm concerned have forfeited your rights. How do you keep from getting shot? Don't try and take away someones property. Simple. Really. I don't steal from anyone. I expect the same from others.

Why does this general topic roast my goat? I had a nice thumbprint on the passenger door knob. How do I know it was the perps? I just finished doing a full detail on my truck. Spotless. And heres a grimey clear print. Took my truck to the reporting center with the nice thumbprint and...
"We don't take fingerprints"
"What!? Its right there plain as day"
"The person can claim they mistakenly went to the wrong vehicle. It is publicly accessible"
"Well considering the fact they where on MY property when they did this, I'll add trespassing to their charges"
-Funny look from officer-
"Yeah, the bastard had to trespass to get to my truck, so fair game"
-Look of exasperation-
-Returned look of disbelief-

So after all the paper work...
"Yanno, you sure could save both of us and the taxpayers a lot of money and time if you used that sidearm on the next perp you catch in action...."
--DEATH STARE that said 'I'm going to arrest you for even suggesting that'.

So WTF? Criminals have more rights to continue their theiving ways. Yet, you stop them from being a drain on society and YOU are the evil one. Messed up is what it is.

The general impression I get from all this (and other goings on) is that criminal rights trump victim rights. Take the farmer from the article, how often has he be a theft victim? How often does it go unresolved? You'd get fed up to one day. The system has some faults that need to be resolved.
